What Are Some Common Foods That Cause Beriberi? Beriberi is preventable and there are several foods that contribute to beriberi. Beriberi occurs more frequently in developing countries. Beriberi disease occurs from a thiamine deficiency. Countries, where white rice is a staple, has more cases of beriberi. These are very common foods that are consumed daily.

- Foods high in carbohydrates
- Alcohol
- Milled rice
- Polished rice
- Consuming large amounts of tea and coffee
- Raw shellfish
